# Range Ready: Designing Military Training Facilities Around the Mission

![](https://blog.coversix.com/hubfs/CoverSix/CoverSix%20Blog%20Images/military-training-facility-coversix.jpg)

 October 6, 2026

Military, government and security personnel train for situations where preparation matters. The facilities where that training takes place need to support the mission and prepare personnel for the scenarios they may encounter in the field.

That makes range development about more than creating a place to fire a weapon. Depending on the training requirements, a facility may incorporate live-fire areas, close-quarters training environments, observation positions, support buildings and other specialized spaces. Each component has a role to play in creating an environment where personnel can develop and maintain mission-critical skills.

CoverSix Shelters designs and manufactures modular structures for government, military and security applications, including facilities that support specialized training requirements.

## Start With the Training Mission

There is no single [range configuration](https://blog.coversix.com/modular-training-facilities/) that fits every organization or training program. A facility designed for basic weapons qualification has different requirements from one intended for close-quarters training or more complex tactical scenarios.

Early planning therefore begins with the intended use of the facility. The types of weapons and ammunition involved, firing distances, number of personnel, training scenarios, tactical movement, instructor and observer needs, site constraints and supporting functions can all influence facility requirements. Future training needs may also affect decisions made during the initial design.

Understanding those requirements helps establish the type, size, configuration and placement of the structures needed throughout the training site. It can also identify demands that may be less obvious when a project is initially defined solely as a "range."

Taking that broader view early in the design process helps ensure the finished facility supports training needs rather than forcing the training program to adapt to the limitations of the facility.

## More Than the Firing Line

A functional [training environment](https://coversix.com/capabilities/modular-training-facilities/) can require infrastructure well beyond the range itself. Depending on the mission, that may include close-quarters combat facilities, Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT) facilities, skills or shoot houses, range control and observation facilities, protected viewing bunkers, ammunition or weapons storage, and other structures used for instruction, security and operational support.

These spaces may serve very different purposes, but they should function as parts of the same training environment. Personnel may need to move between instructional areas, practical training spaces and observation or support positions during a single exercise.

Training facilities present a unique design challenge: they must support realistic exercises while maintaining appropriate protections for instructors, trainees, observers and other personnel. Those requirements can influence where structures are located, how personnel enter and exit training areas, where instructors or observers are positioned and what protective features are incorporated into individual buildings.

There is no single set of requirements that applies to every military training facility. The customer, service branch, installation, weapon systems, ammunition, facility type and training mission can all influence the design. Depending on the application, considerations may include ballistic containment and ricochet control, [Surface Danger Zone requirements](https://home.army.mil/knox/1817/4863/2551/AR_385-63_Range_Safety.pdf), ventilation, egress, access control, physical security and other installation-specific safety needs.

The necessary level of protection also depends on how the facility will be used. A viewing bunker, for example, serves a different purpose from a structure used directly within a tactical training environment. The threat, ammunition and training activity therefore need to be understood before [appropriate materials](https://blog.coversix.com/ballistic-resistant-materials-steel-security-design/), configuration and protective requirements can be determined.

Addressing those requirements early allows safety, training functionality and constructability to be considered together rather than independently later in the project.

Specialized training infrastructure does not always have to be constructed entirely at the project site. Modular construction allows a structure to be fabricated in a controlled environment before being transported to the site for installation. For government and military projects, this approach can reduce contractor traffic, congestion and interference with ongoing operations at an active installation while providing greater control over fabrication, integration and inspection. Building systems such as electrical, HVAC, controls and security provisions can also be integrated during fabrication, before the structure reaches the site.

It can also support a broader [design-build approach](https://blog.coversix.com/design-build-modular-construction/). Instead of treating design, fabrication and installation as disconnected phases, requirements can be evaluated with the realities of manufacturing, transportation and site installation in mind. Site and civil work may also be able to progress while modules are being manufactured, allowing activities that would otherwise occur sequentially to move forward in parallel.

Modular training facilities do not have to be identical. Proven construction methods and repeatable design concepts can be combined with mission-specific engineering and configuration based on the intended use, site conditions and customer requirements.

That repeatability can also be valuable when similar training capabilities are needed at multiple installations. Once a design has been established, it can provide a starting point for additional facilities while still allowing modifications for local site conditions and training needs.

CoverSix works with government, military and security customers to design and manufacture hardened modular structures for specialized applications.
